Healthoscope - Preventative HealthCare App

Healthoscope

“ If you have a close family member with a chronic disease, you may be more likely to develop that disease yourself, you can’t change your family health history, but you can change unhealthy behavior” — CDC ( Center for Disease Control )

Project Overview

The aim of Healthosope is to help educate and empower American to take charge of their health. Our initial problem statement is that " people care about their health, but they are uninformed and unmotivated " .  We are setting out to design an app that will educates and motivates our users to take charge of their health.

We put together a survey that will help us gather more information on what people know about health and preventative health care: if they know what health screening they need to do based on their age; how often they go to see their primary care physician;  how often they see their dentist; if they know about their family healthy history, how do they keep a record of their family health history;  how often do they exercise if they do exercise ; What role they play in taking care of their health; Do they use technology to keep track of their health?

We received 51 responses :

·      44% of people care about exercise

·      42% of people does physical check up

·      38% of people watch their diet

·      54% of people does not have any written family health record

we saw an opportunity where we can design an app that help people take a proactive role in their health.

We want to give people a tool to keep track of their family health history and have knowledge of how their family health history factor into their health. This powerful tool which can give user a personalized health recommendation based on their family health history. Our initial assumption of what our user need — need to be validate , we need to gather information/ insight on what user feel about their health and what they do with preventative care, what we wanted to hear how people define preventative care as well.

Interview Process

We interview six people and we formulate their data into affinity mapping and I statements

Here is the I statement that we formulated based on our user interviews :

·      I like to be physically active to stay healthy

·      I go to regular medical checkups for manage my health

·      I think eating healthy is part of preventative care

·      I prefer to lead a healthy lifestyle rather than rely on medication

·      I care about health of my family

·      I educate myself on health

·      I know I ‘m vulnerable in health as I age

·      I like using technology to help keep track of my health

From the I statement we discover that people do care about their health, there are general two group of people, one group care about preventative care and they play a proactive role in research up diet ,  nutrition tip and medical related information online to further enhance their health and their family’s health. We also found a common theme that when people read up on the information on preventative care, they feel Inspired to take a proactive role in applying what they learned. They see the benefit of their healthy action, they have more energy  and in addition their change positively influences their other family member to make the same shift.

There is another group that do not take much thought and consideration into their preventative care, they know that preventative health care is important.  Healthy action such as eating health, exercise regularly , and seeing doctor are important part of preventative health care, however they don't do anything about them . They do have some of their family members health history, but they don’t have a written family health record.

who are we design for ?

based on the data we collected and synthesized , we created two persona which summarize the target audience that we are serving.

Define

what problem are we solving ?

“People care about preventative health care, they feel unmotivated to take a proactive role in their preventative care, they do not have a record of their family health history, they are unclear about what they need to do based on their age and family history, how might we educate and inspire them to play a proactive role in their health ? ”

Design Studio

Imagine what the experience could be for our end user

Imagine what the experience could be for our end user

In our initial design studio, We are brainstorming ways that we can help educate and motivate people to be more proactive, we were inspired by TED ‘s video platform and offline reading, we were inspired by amazon kindle book reading ,  we were inspired by the story that we heard from one of our interviewer ‘s parent. When she read article on nutrition and health , it motivated her to change her diet and her health. We were inspired by the risk calculator question that is develop by the CDC. We were also inspired by the idea that preventative health care is a shift of focus from disease care to a shift that focus on preventative health Care that includes eating healthy , exercising , health screening, regular doctor check up.

We regroup  and critique on the ideas we came up with our first design concept. There are four key goals and functions we like to build into our new app that help educate and empower our users .

1.  Create a discovery channel that user can discover video, audio, book content and they can read them offline which educate them on health and nutrition.

2. Incorporate a provider category that user can get access to and search a nutritionist or a personal trainer if they need additional support.

3. Create a chatbot profile creating experience for our first time user.

4. Create a metric section that user can use the risk calculator and track their health metric

We presented our first prototype  and discuss with two developers ,  we also discuss our first prototype with our instructor, we realized that the first prototype has too many features that we weren’t be able to develop in our first Minimal Viable Product.

We regrouped and we needed to re-focus and focus only on fewer features that we can build that will provided the most value for our users.

We came back to our problem statement, we realized that a lot of user are not tracking their family health history and they do not have a personalized health recommendation that is based on their family health history, we shift our key goal to create an app where it will give user a personalized health recommendations based on the information that we received, the more information that we received, the more accurate /detail recommendations that we can provide for our users.

We finalized on these four Key features in our first phase roll out MVP:

·      Health Profile

·      Family Medical History

·      Risk Calculator

·      Dictionary

Usability Testing Round 1 :

Screen Shot 2018-07-05 at 8.02.23 PM.png
Screen Shot 2018-07-05 at 8.27.34 PM.png

We tested with four users and we asked each of them to complete two tasks, one is to create a profile and enter a family member’s health history and received a personalized health recommendations. Second one is to use the risk calculator and received personalized recommendations.

Here is what user said about our revised app :

·      “I love the robot guide it make the medical topic more bearable “– Max.

·      “what is the purpose of asking all these questions” — Liz

·      “ This screen ( Family Medical Screen) is confusing, where is the get recommendation button”- Anne

we do have some navigation issue with this version, some things are not properly linked, need better navigation

Based on our usability’s testing, we realized that dictionary does not provided enough value for our users, so we swap out dictionary and we put recommendation on the bottom tab navigation, since recommendation is the core value that we provide for our user, we want them to be able to access them directly.

For our next iteration , we also add more instructional text and step by step icon to help navigating users in the  creating a profile process. We also made a major change to the add a family member screen, we replaced the complicated , overcrowded and confusing screen to a  simple and easy to navigate screen in adding a family member process.

Usability Testing Round 2:

We also tested with four users and have them complete two tasks

Here is what our user said about the version 2 prototype

.      “This is a helpful app, I would use this, I love the concept and purpose “– Frenchy

·      “I like that I know where I am on the app the step by step icon is very helpful “– Kevin

·      “I like the information is break down into three sections, medical, nutrition and fitness, it is digestible “– Andrew

·      “It is nice that I ‘m given the option to escape and skip certain steps “– Andrew ( he is referring to option to use the risk calculator directly without having to sign up)

Dislike

. some of the question in the lifestyle section, the words are phrase weird

.people were expected answer sometime in the do you smoke section and do you exercise section, people were expected           answer besides yes and no

. In the disease action, people were wondering how do you select more than one disease if your family member has more than         one disease

Our Brand Partner: Oscar

·      Oscar ‘s brand personality if very much compatible with our app

·      They are user centric and human centric, they make the complicated hospital billing system easy simple and fun

·      “Our ethos is creating great consumer experience, we wanted to create an experience like having a doctor in the family “

Our Platform IOS: based on our research, we found that there is advantage for having an iOS app as our chosen platform

·      Our user can access them anywhere they like

·      Our user doesn’t need to sign in every time they need to use the app

·      We are able to use the apple’s device function for next phase roll out — Health trackers

·      Our target audience: young, relatively educated, and urban

Conclusion

In the process of design this health app , We have pivoted from our initial "  featurities "  app to a more centralized concept which provide a core value  and serve a gap in the market place.  Through our iterations , we have enhanced the usability with simplified screen and clear navigation helper text . What I learned in this project is the abilities to trust the process and pivot and iterate when new data ask you to and our user is the source of that data.  If we wanted to create a user - centric product that serves a important and useful purpose,  we must to put our user at the center of our design process,  be open to their feedback and iterate when we found new data.

Here are our phases roll out:

·      Phase 1: Recommendation, Risk Calculators, Family Health Profile, User Health Profile

·      Phase 2: Tree diagram, Health Trackers, Invite Family Members

·      Phase 3: Store Medical Records, Reminders

This list  will need another iteration when we arrived at the phase 2

I learned that having a plan is awesome, have the abilities to redirect based on what data tell you is where the real fruit are.
